Employment Opportunities

Perth is a great place to live and work.  The Economist Intelligence Unit recently ranked it among the leading cities of the world in its Liveability Index.  The Index assesses living conditions in 127 cities around the world by looking at nearly 40 individual indicators grouped into five categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure.

Employment opportunities, both clinical and academic, regularly arise within the Oral Health Centre.

Specific employment categories include:

  •  General Dentist
  •  Dental Clinic Assistant
  •  Endodontist

  •  Paediatric Dentist
  •  Periodontist
  •  Prosthodontist
  •  Oral Surgeon
  •  Dental Therapist.

 All positions require an Australian-recognised qualification. In general terms the only overseas trained dentists who are able to be immediately registered are those with a Bachelor degree obtained from the United Kingdom, Ireland or New Zealand.  For more information overseas trained dentists, hygienists and therapists should consult the Australian Dental Council's website at http://www.dentalcouncil.net.au/.

 Dental Clinic Assistants must hold a Certificate IV in Dental Assisting from TAFE or an equivalent qualification.

 Positions for which full-time, part-time or casual vacancies currently exist are:

  •  Dental Clinic Assistant (Dental Assistant)
  •  General Dentist
  •  Orthodontist
  •  Receptionist

 Working hours are negotiable and can usually be constructed to suit the needs of employees with family responsibilities.

 Training Dental Clinic Assistant Programme

The Oral Health Centre annually offers a number of training positions for Dental Clinic Assistants.  This program is directed primarily but not exclusively at school leavers.  A salary of $18.11 per hour is paid over four days per week, with the other day spent by the Trainee undertaking the formal part of the TAFE Certificate IV in Dental Assisting.  The Centre also pays the TAFE fees over the 18 month period of this course.

Completion of Year 11 with a pass in English and Science (preferably Human Biology) is a mandatory pre-requisite.

At the end of the 18 month training period, employment as a qualified Dental Clinic Assistant will be offered subject to satisfactory completion of the TAFE program and satisfactory work performance.
