Frequently Asked Questions

Q          How do I know if I’m able to be treated at the Oral Health Centre?

A          Consult the Eligibility information on this site.  If you meet these requirements, and you live in the OCHWA catchment area, then you can receive subsidised dental treatment at OHCWA.

If you receive general dental treatment at another public dental clinic but you require specialist treatment, then your dentist can refer you here to be seen by the relevant specialist.

Q          How do I apply for dental treatment at OHCWA?

A          You can download an Application Form, complete it and send it to us at the address below.  Alternatively you can ring the Centre and an Application Form will be sent to you.

You must include with the Form a photocopy of your Healthcare or Pension Concession Card, together with a statement of benefit from either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

If you are being referred for specialist dental treatment you must also include the letter of referral from your dentist, and relevant x-rays if your dentist has given these to you.

Q          What will my treatment cost me?

A          This will depend on the treatment that the dentist provides to you.  You are entitled to ask questions about this before treatment starts.

The fees charged by the Centre are based on a fee schedule established for all public treatment in Western Australia, and various levels of subsidy apply (see Fees).

Patients seen by 3rd and 4th year dental students are not charged for their treatment.

Q          Can I be treated by a 3rd or 4th year students and therefore not pay any fees?

A          This will depend on a number of factors.  Not every case is suitable for students (see Student Treatment).  If you are interested in student treatment please ring 93464400.

Q          What do I do if I am not happy with the treatment proposed by the dentist?

A          You do not have to undergo any treatment that you disagree with, and you are able to ask for a second opinion.  Your rights as a patient are summarised in the Centre’s Privacy Policy.  For further information about your rights, you are advised to read the Health Consumer’s Council brochure, Making a Dental Complaint.
