The University of Western Australia School of Dentistry
Since 1946, the University of Western Australia Faculty of Dental Science (as it was then known) has conferred the degree of Bachelor of Dental Science. Like all dental schools in Australia, the UWA School of Dentistry has since seen periods of growth and expansion as well as some difficult times. The establishment of the Oral Health Centre of WA in 2002 represents a commitment to quality oral health care education and service by the University and the Health Department of WA. OHCWA is a state of the art dental teaching and learning facility united with an oral health care clinic that is the only institution in Western Australia offering tertiary training in dentistry. OHCWA brings together all aspects of dental education in Western Australia. As well as the University of WA, School of Dentistry, OHCWA also incorporates Curtin University with its Dental Hygiene and School Dental Therapy courses and Central TAFE with its Dental Clinic Assisting and Dental Technology courses. This relationship offers exciting opportunities for collaborative teaching and learning. |
| UWA MissionStatement The University's primary mission is to advance, transmit and sustain knowledge and understanding, by means of pure and applied research, and teaching. To this end it must foster the intellectual values required for the discharge of these duties; the love of knowledge and teaching; the spirit of free enquiry in both critical and creative endeavours: the diligence and discipline of serious research and scholarship; the commitment to experiment; and the flexibility to modify beliefs and actions in the light of evidence. |
School of Dentistry Educational Philosophy The School of Dentistry believes that students learn best when teaching and learning methods focus on student-centred approaches whenever possible. Students develop a broad base of knowledge, multi-faceted experiences and the ability to think critically and apply knowledge to solve problems through the use of problem-based clinical situations, computer activities, lecture and self-directed learning programs. A graduate of the BDSc course from the School of Dentistry at the University of Western Australia should have sufficient understanding, knowledge, skills and attitudes to be a caring, competent, reflective and ethical dental practitioner. |
